The world of Ardem is set in Minnowa, a fictional region inspired by the Midwestern United States. Designed to feel grounded and believable, Minnowa blends elements of states such as Minnesota, Iowa, and Wisconsin into a cohesive and immersive survival environment.
Minnowa is a handcrafted open-world map spanning approximately 64 square kilometres. The region is characterised by: vast open farmlands, dense rural landscapes, small towns and industrial areas and quiet, isolated stretches of wilderness.
Despite its size, the world is intentionally designed to feel lonely and atmospheric, reinforcing the survival tone of the game.

Setting & Inspiration
The environment draws heavy inspiration from the American Midwest, particularly regions known for agricultural land and crop fields, farming infrastructure, animal life and small, tight-knit communities. This results in a world that feels familiar, grounded, and lived-in, even after its collapse.
To enhance realism, the developers have focused on environmental storytelling throughout the map. While Minnowa can feel quiet and isolated, that silence can be deceptive. Players may often feel alone while exploring the vast landscape, but the world is designed to maintain a constant sense of tension and uncertainty.
As players explore Minnowa, they may encounter:
- Custom licence plates unique to the region
- Local advertisements and signage
- Abandoned markets and commercial buildings
- Remnants of everyday life before the apocalypse
These details help paint a picture of what life was like before the world fell apart. As well as the design of Minnowa being suitable to support a wide range of gameplay styles such as:
- Exploration: Large open areas and varied points of interest encourage players to explore and discover hidden locations.
- Base Building: The abundance of farmland, buildings, and open space provides numerous opportunities for base building, whether in remote areas or within existing structures.
- Looting: The loot system is contextual and location-based, meaning: different areas offer different types of items, points of interest influence what can be found and exploration is rewarded with more relevant gear.
